Rise and shine, it’s time for another story about one of Exeter’s local businesses, and it’s a surprising one! Today we’re going to talk about a company called Student Express, directed by Lee Michaels. Student Express helps students move their belongings - whether it be from one flat to another, to a storage facility, or even to another city.
It all started when Lee bought a van to travel to his DJ gigs during the week end, he would sleep in it when he went to festivals. Soon, he came to the realisation that the van could be even more useful, so he advertised a “man with a van” type of service, and guess what, he got inundated with requests for removals & transportation. From here, Student Express was born.
Lee actually came up with a great idea to get this business kick-started: he used to work for food delivery companies such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats, and he would give out these impressively designed flyers when he delivered them to students who had ordered food.

This strategy was vital for Lee’s student removals company as the outreach was like no other, what better way of advertising your company is there than being able to distribute flyers to your target market directly? As a marketing and advertising company ourselves, we really admire this type of entrepreneurship and I myself was quite impressed when I heard about it.
Moving on, the business started working really well, Lee was able to find a partnership with a storage facility in Exeter, which made his service even more practical. Students could now store their items for extended periods of time, without having to move it all themselves. This market was analysed and targeted very well because students really require this type of service - What would they do if they were stuck in a car park with 10 boxes? Luckily Student Express is here to save them.
What makes removals, transportation, and storage difficult?
One thing that makes this business model hard from time to time is that it’s fairly “seasonal”. When students are studying, they are less likely to need this type of service. But Lee already has ideas to overcome this. He will soon offer a wide range of help for students, for example, click and collect services at super markets, shops such as ikea, dunelm, etc...
There really is not too much that makes Lee’s life difficult when it comes to this line of work. One other thing to mention might be the maintenance of the vehicles. Student Express Removals & Transportation is looking to expand, which means more vehicles and more room for error. This, however, does not scare Lee, he is confident in his ability to deal with this sort of headache in the fastest way possible, making sure it doesn’t affect his customer service.
