We were lucky enough to talk with Paris last week about the business she runs. She originally started her apprenticeship in 2017 to become a painter and decorator, she then carried on with the same company for a while, before going for the self-employed route. Paris went through the whole process of building a website, buying a van, all of the equipment, and so on, to make sure that she was fully prepared for the journey ahead of her. Not only that, she also took part in lots of extra courses to add to her skillset. At this point, Paris was well and truly ready to become a self-employed painter and decorator.

For the moment, the business runs just fine with Paris on her own, and some occasional help from her partner, so for the moment there is no desire to take on more workers and expand the company. “Don’t overthink it, just do it!” would be Paris’ advice for a young entrepreneur, looking to start a business of their own. As she says: it is not worth imagining all of these different scenarios before taking action, imagination is worse than reality.

What would be an ideal job for you? “I really like a job where the customer not only wants your work, but also wants your input and advice for certain designs, color schemes, etc” is the answer Paris gave us, which is very understandable, it is very nice to be able to help customers with these types of decisions.
